Becoming Wise: An Inquiry into the Mystery and Art of Living
by Krista Tippet
Krista Tippet is a journalist and host of the Peabody award winning podcast, On Being. “Becoming Wise”, a New York Times Best seller, is a collection of interviews with hundreds of conversation partners over the past 15 years. She received the National Humanities Medal in 2014 for “thoughtfully delving into the mysteries of human existence. On the air and in print, Ms. Tippett avoids easy answers, embracing complexity and inviting people of every background to join her conversation about faith, ethics, and moral wisdom.” She has the ability to ask the deep questions with thoughtfulness, depth and beautiful language.
The book covers 5 topics of life: Words, Flesh, Love, Faith, and Hope. Within these topics, she share life stories from the past and present. She interviewed philosophers, teachers, political activists and spiritual thinkers. I was pleasantly surprised by the topics on which each discussed. For instance, Vincent Harding (who helped Martin Luther King Jr write his Vietnam War speech and develop his practice of nonviolence) discussed Words as Poetry. Margaret Wertheim, a quantum physicist and neuroscientist, discussed the intersection of science and faith.
I highly recommend this book and listening to the audiobook. I enjoyed hearing the author narrate and hearing the voices of the contributors. It felt both contemporary and historical. It was an excellent way of looking at these aspects of humanity from expected and unexpected places.
